There has been a serious deficiency of water resources in Iran during the last two decades, especially in central drought-prone areas of the country. Historically, Qanats system has been considered as one of the important traditional methods to supply underground water serving agriculture and other sectors" needs. Considering the unique features of qanats, farmers or qanats users play a vital role in maintenance and development of this system, which has been seriously jeopardized due to recent modernizations policies in agriculture. A descriptive survey research was conducted to investigate the factors determining farmers" participation in economic activities associated with maintenance, development and improvement of qanats, with an emphasis on the sustainable use of water in economic affairs of qanats in Taft district. The sample population of the study consisted of 120 qanat users which were selected by using proportional stratified random sampling method. Data collection instrument was a questionnaire which its validity was confirmed by a panel of experts and its reliability was established by calculating Cronbachs Alpha coefficients. The results of correlation analysis showed that there was significant and positive relationship between independent variables of technical factors, executive/managerial factors, social trust/ coherence, methods of information acquisition, social participation, and attitudes towards participation and the dependent variable of economic-related activities of qanat users at % 99 alpha levels. There was not significant relationship between the age and years of farming experiences with the dependent variable of the study. The results of stepwise regression analysis showed that attitude toward participation, Social participation, managerial/executive of qanat explained 50.0 percent of variances of participation in economic-related activities of sustainable use of qanats water in Taft district. Also the findings indicated that the variable of social participation had the highest effect on dependant variable. The findings of this study can contribute to policy making and supportive program planning related to the government plans to make appropriate decisions in supporting sustainable use of qanat system
